        Rita Tepper Horowitz

        Born in Newark, New Jersey on April 27, 1929, graduated Columbia High School in Maplewood and earned a Bachelors Degree in Spanish from Syracuse University. She was a realtor in Millburn for over 50 years, welcoming her clients as friends into her home. Rita loved people and socially her activities included monthly bridge as well as frequent tennis matches at Center Court in Madison and The Berkeley Tennis Club in Orange. Rita was an advocate for all, especially welcoming and supporting recent Russian Immigrants in their new community. She was a vital participant in a host of community organizations including the Essex County soup kitchen, the Bobrow kosher food pantry, National Council of Jewish Women, New Eyes for the Needy, Daughters of Israel Pleasant Valley Way Home, and Friends of the Millburn Library, to name a few. She was a life long learner in Jewish Studies. Her service to synagogue life at both Congregation B'nai Israel and Oheb Shalom Congregation spanned more than 50 years and was instrumental in the success of nearly every program from childhood education to elderly services. Rita was universally acknowledged as a pillar of service to whatever community she belonged to. Connection to people of all walks of life were her life's mission, seeing the good in all people.

        Following the passing of her beloved Jerry after 64 years of blessed marriage Rita became an active member of the Inglemoor Care Center community making many new friends including staff and fellow residents.

        Rita is survived by her brother-in-law Robert Horowitz (Harlene), sister-in-law Peggy Franc, daughters Dr Jo Ann Horowitz of Summit, Beth Giladi of Verona and son Dr John Horowitz of Winter Park, Florida (Deborah), her grandchildren Dr Aviram Giladi (Kristen), Dr Leor Giladi (Amanda), Elana, Max and Miles Horowitz, all of whom she cherished dearly. Rita was predeceased by her husband Dr Jerome, sister Shirlee Sarasohn, brother Leonard Tepper, son Alan Horowitz.

        Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Oheb Shalom Congregation, South Orange, NJ. Arrangements were handled by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union, NJ.

        Donations in Rita's blessed memory may be made to Inglemoor Care Center of Livingston NJ Resident Council and/or Staff Holiday Fund, Chabad of Southeast Morris County, or the charity of your choosing.

        Leonard Albert Tepper, 81, of Asheville, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, at John F. Keever Solace Center, Asheville.

        Mr. Tepper was born Oct. 12, 1924 in Newark, N.J., the son of the late Lillian (Schoenbrun) and Jules Tepper. He moved to North Carolina from Hackensack, N.J. in 1986. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. He graduated in 1947 from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and attended Columbia Law School. He retired from Mass Mutual Life Insurance Co. as a financial planner with over 30 yrs. of service.

        He enjoyed community theater and was a member of Studio Players of Montclair, N.J. In his later years he also enjoyed writing poetry and gardening and was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Buncombe Co. and Pathways-Life After Cancer in Asheville.

        He is survived by his wife, Peggy Franc of the home; sons, James Tepper of Boonton Twp, N.J., David Tepper of Livingston, N.J., Daniel Tepper of Easton, Md., and Jonathan Tepper of Plainfield, N.J.; sisters Shirlee Sarasohn of West Orange, N.J., and Rita Horowitz of Millburn, N.J.; and 5 grandchildren.

        A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Jewish Community Center, 236 Charlotte St., Asheville.

        In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Pathways-Life After Cancer, 121 Sherwood Road, Asheville 28803

        Jerome Horowitz, D.D.S., 90, devoted family man and community leader, for whom living life and building connections, rather than material possessions, were his guiding passions. He served as Past-President of the Millburn Township Board of Education and Congregation B'nai Israel of Millburn. He was a 12 year member of the Board of Governors of Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center and an immediate past Board member of Oheb Shalom congregation of South Orange. He was a Past-President of the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry, served with the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners, a Past-President of the New Jersey Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity, and he was the founder of the dental clinic at Daughters of Israel, the only geriatric center in the state with a dental clinic. He participated in many dental missions to the indigent residents of the State of Israel. He was the Past-President of the Jewish Historical Society of MetroWest. He was a founding father of the Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad and its first president. He was a Past-President of Millburn-Short Hills Kiwanis. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific Front. Jerome was a life-long learner and an ardent New York Giants fan. He was an ever-present patriarch at his kids and grandkids events, surviving to be the "last man standing" at Lake Highland Prep's (Florida) Grandparents Day.

        He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rita (Tepper) Horowitz; Brother Robert (Harlene); four children: Alan, Jo Ann, Beth Giladi, and John (Deborah Leavitt); five grandchildren: Aviram Giladi (Kristen), Leor Giladi (Amanda), Elana, Max, and Miles, Sister-in-law Peggy Franc, and a host of loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his Parents Abraham and Ruth (Schwartz) Horowitz, Sister-in-Law Shirlee Sarasohn, and brother-in-law Leonard Tepper. After a full and well-lived life, Jerry will be missed by many. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 10, at 11 am at Oheb Shalom Congregation, South Orange, NJ. Internment at Bnai Abraham Memorial Park, Union to follow. Donations in Jerry's memory may be made to the charitable organization of your choice.
