Narrative

Jerome Horowitz, D.D.S., 90, devoted family man and community leader, for whom living life and building connections, rather than material possessions, were his guiding passions. He served as Past-President of the Millburn Township Board of Education and Congregation B'nai Israel of Millburn. He was a 12 year member of the Board of Governors of Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center and an immediate past Board member of Oheb Shalom congregation of South Orange. He was a Past-President of the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry, served with the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners, a Past-President of the New Jersey Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity, and he was the founder of the dental clinic at Daughters of Israel, the only geriatric center in the state with a dental clinic. He participated in many dental missions to the indigent residents of the State of Israel. He was the Past-President of the Jewish Historical Society of MetroWest. He was a founding father of the Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad and its first president. He was a Past-President of Millburn-Short Hills Kiwanis. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific Front. Jerome was a life-long learner and an ardent New York Giants fan. He was an ever-present patriarch at his kids and grandkids events, surviving to be the "last man standing" at Lake Highland Prep's (Florida) Grandparents Day.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rita (Tepper) Horowitz; Brother Robert (Harlene); four children: Alan, Jo Ann, Beth Giladi, and John (Deborah Leavitt); five grandchildren: Aviram Giladi (Kristen), Leor Giladi (Amanda), Elana, Max, and Miles, Sister-in-law Peggy Franc, and a host of loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his Parents Abraham and Ruth (Schwartz) Horowitz, Sister-in-Law Shirlee Sarasohn, and brother-in-law Leonard Tepper. After a full and well-lived life, Jerry will be missed by many. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 10, at 11 am at Oheb Shalom Congregation, South Orange, NJ. Internment at Bnai Abraham Memorial Park, Union to follow. Donations in Jerry's memory may be made to the charitable organization of your choice.
