        Alan Mark Horowitz
Sociology professor at the University of Delaware

Born in Newark, N.J., in 1952, Mr. Horowitz completed his schooling through high school in Millburn, N.J. He received his bachelor's degree from Muhlenberg College, and then attended The University of Delaware for graduate studies in sociology.

Alan lived all of his adult life in Wilmington, Del., on staff at U. of D. as an associate professor in the Department of Sociology with a particular focus on social deviance and vice. He co-authored a book entitled, "The Sociology of American Drug Use," published in 2010. Decades of former students still share accolades about him as their favorite professor.

Alan was an avid fan of music, satire, and art, essentially unbeatable in any game of trivia, and loved cards and word games. Later in his life, he actively took up bridge, competing regularly and becoming a Gold Life Master in relatively short time. He was president of the Delaware State Bridge Association from 2014 to 2016, and enjoyed taking time to teach the game to others whenever he could.

Alan is survived by his beloved mother, Rita Tepper Horowitz; aunt, Peg Franc; sister, Dr. Jo Ann Horowitz of Summit, N.J.; sister, Beth Horowitz Giladi of West Orange, N.J.; brother, Dr. John Horowitz (Deborah Leavitt Horowitz) of Winter Park, Fla., and his nieces and nephews, Avi Giladi (Kristen Giladi), Leor Giladi (Amanda Giladi), Elana Horowitz, Max Horowitz, and Miles Horowitz, all of whom he loved and cared for as if they were his own. He was predeceased by his uncle, Leonard Tepper.
