Irene W. Lyons, 101, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died December 28, 2013, at the Charles Morris Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of the Jewish Association on Aging, Pittsburgh, PA.
Born November 9, 1912, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late William and Ethel Winkler. She grew up in Ashley and was a graduate of Ashley High School and Wharton Extension School of the University of Pennsylvania. Irene was a member of Temple Israel and its sisterhood, where she was affectionately known as Aunt Irene; a life member of the Jewish Community Center where she helped found the original Leisure Lounge program for senior adults; a Board Member of the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania who advocated for the creation of the Elan Gardens Assisted Living community; active in Hadassah and other Jewish community organizations; and a board member of the Girl Scouts Council serving the Wyoming Valley.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harry J. Lyons in 1995, to whom she had been married for 57 years. For many of those years, she assisted him in his dental practice in Wilkes-Barre and later in Pittston. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Attorney Herbert Winkler.
She is survived by her children, Carol Meyers and husband, Eric, Durham, NC, and Charles Lyons and
wife, Rosemarie, Pittsburgh, PA; 4 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A simple graveside funeral service and interment will be conducted on Monday, December 30, 2013 at
1:00 PM at the Temple Israel Cemetery in Swoyersville with support from the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River Street, Wilkes-Barre.
Shiva will be observed at the Woodlands Inn on Monday, December 30 in the evening, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
