World of Yesterday

William Felber and his family first came to the United States in June 1881. They lived first in Hoboken, New Jersey before returning to Vienna in the summer of 1883. On 21 September 1883, the family re-entered the United States on the ship "Main", arriving in New York Harbor. The ship manifest includes the following names:

Johanna, age 24, wife
Armin, age 5 yrs., 6 months,
Gisela, age 4 yrs.
Isador, age II (2) yrs.

In 1900, the Felber family is seen in Manhattan, New York:

William Felber, b. March 1857, Germany, age 43, merchant, pipemaker, married for 20 yrs., came to U.S. in 1881
wife, Johanna, b. May 1862, Germany, age 38, married for 20 yrs., mother 9 children (only 6 alive), came to U.S. in 1884
son, Albert, b. March 1880, Germany, age 20, salesman, smoking pipes, came to U.S. in 1886
son, Isidor, b. March 1881, Germany, age 19, merchant, pipemaker, came to U.S. in 1881
son, Charles, b. December 1887, NY, age 12
daughter, Rebecca, b. January 1891, NY, age 9

"Wilhelm Felber", age 46, was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in New York City on 11 June 1900. In his application, he stated that he first arrived in the U.S. in June 1881.

In March 1917, William Felber was residing at 330 E. 84th Street, Third Floor, Manhattan, New York.

The family lost three children in early childhood. These were born in Manhattan about 1885, 1889 and 1893. All died before 1900.
