Barbara B. Winkler, Longboat Key, died at home on March 2, 2009.
Barbara, born and raised in New York City, was the daughter of the late Fay and Harry Bernstein. Her sister is Carol Pomerantz of Floral Park, New York. Barbara was an alumna of New York University. She lived with her husband of 42 years, the late attorney Herbert L. Winkler, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Philadelphia, before settling here year round. She later married again, to the late Milton Mandell.
Barbara loved books, classical music, fine art, sudoku, scrabble, travel, her cat, Sassy, and, most of all, her family. Barbara's warmth, generosity, and love will always be deeply felt by her three daughters and their husbands, Shelley Winkler and David Stopak of Washington Grove, Md., Jean Winkler and Richard Hillel of Belmont, Mass., and Linda Winkler and Don Herzog of Ann Arbor, Mich., as well as her six grandchildren, Emma, Jenny, Rebecca, Anna, Eli and Sarah, who love their Nana.
A private service will be held on March 6.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Way of Sarasota County. Toale Brothers Funeral Homes, Colonial chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
