MELBOURNE: Montefiore Homes president Charles Lux paid tribute to Vaida Southwick, who died recently after a lifetime of devoted service to the Homes.

Mr Lux said Mrs Southwick’s interest in Montefiore Homes had begun as a child, when her family lived on St Hilda Road, almost opposite the Homes.

“Her father, Sholem Slutzkin, no doubt initiated her involvement, as it was the family custom to visit residents in the Homes cottages on Saturdays,” Mr
        Lux said.

Mr Slutzkin served as president of the Homes from 1946 to 1952.

Mrs Southwick’s husband David also served as president of the Homes, from 1981 to 1983, and today is chairman of the board of
        management.

During this period Mrs Southwick was do president of the Montefiore Ladies Auxiliary, from 1981to 1984.

“Valda’s commitment to helping others is reflected also in her work with Ezra, which was established at her initiative in 1945 after a suggestion by her aunt,
Rose Siutzkin, who started Ezra in Israel, and her cousin, Viva Davis, who founded the Sydney branch.

Her work for Ezra was acknowledged with the award of a life governorship several years ago.

Mrs Southwick also served on the ladies’ committee of the Frances Barkman Home.

“Vaida was happiest when she was helping others, and she always felt that everyone else’s problems were worse than her own,” Mr Lux said.

“She was a most remarkable lady in every way and a truly compassionate person who will be deeply missed at Montefiori Homes.”

Mrs Southwick is survived by her husband David, son Graeme, daughter Judith and five grandchildren.
