Marjorie Stump Thomson, 91, after an extended illness, peacefully passed from this life to the next on Friday morning, May 30, 2008, with her daughters at her bedside. Her warm smile and sweet spirit will be treasured by her family as her enduring legacy.
Born in Starke, Florida, on February 15th in 1917, the second daughter of Fred Field and Eva Woods Stump, Marjorie attended Florida State College for Women, graduating with a dual degrees in music and science education. She also received her Master's Degree at Fl. State University. Following her initial experience as a classroom teacher in Altha, Florida, Marjorie secured a position as Band Director at Jefferson County High School in Monticello, Florida. As the first woman to hold this position, Marjorie was known for her contributions to the music program, especially through the creation of Jefferson County High School's marching band.
In Monticello, Marjorie met the love of her life, William Henry Thomson, Jr., a newly commissioned officer in the U. S. Army Air Force. Marjorie and Bill were married in Starke on March 15, 1942, and Marjorie began her life as an army bride, giving birth to their first son in Starke while Bill was on active duty in the Asian front. When Bill returned to the States, she joined him and they settled in Jefferson County, establishing their branch of the Thomson family farm. Marjorie and Bill had four children, Fred (1943), Marjorie Ellen (1945), Evelyn (1947), and Henry (1954).
Marjorie was a musician whose talent for music enhanced her life; she played for weddings and other special events, taught young, aspiring musicians, and accompanied the choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello, where she served as organist and pianist for years. Marjorie and Bill were also active members of the Waukeenah United Methodist Church, the spiritual home of the Thomson family for generations.
As an educational leader, Marjorie served as President of Phi Beta Kappa, a teacher's honorary organization Upon her retirement, Marjorie returned to Starke and embarked with enthusiasm on beautification projects and became a contributing member of the Women's Club of Starke, The Hospital Auxiliary of Shands Hospital, The American Cancer Society, The First Presbyterian Church.
Marjorie is survived by her four children and their spouses, Fred and Ruth Ann Thomson of Tallahassee, Florida; Marjorie and Phillip Jacobs of Scarsdale, New York; Evelyn and James Womack of Hampton Lake, Florida; and Henry and Cydney Thomson of Huntsville, Alabama, six grandsons, their spouses and seven great grandchildren as follows: Todd and Autumn Thomson, Irelyn, Bryre, and Covenington; Bill and Shelley Hamilton, Ansley and Fisher; Brad and Valerie Hamilton, Justin and Alex; Elie Jacobs, Joshua Jacobs, and Michael Jacobs.
Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Starke on Monday at 10 a.m., followed by internment at 3 p.m. in the Waukeenah Methodist Church Cemetery, Waukeenah, Florida.. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 4:30 - 6:00pm on Sunday, June 1st.
